2006 RELL SUNN AWARDEE

Dr. Georgia Robins Sadler embodies the "spirit ofaloha" through her far reaching efforts to bring cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, prompt treatment, and clinical trials to often overlooked groups. The programs she has created serve both San Diego and have received national recognition for their innovation, efficiency, and impact.

Malcolm Gladwell recognized these characteristics when he described Dr. Sadler's work in his book, The Tipping Point. Dr. Sadler has built bridges to San Diego's deaf community, as well as the county's Asian, Pacific Islander, African American, Hispanic, and Native American Indian populations. She has created programs to help oncologists refer patients to clinical trials and is a frequent spokesperson when the news media focuses on cancer.

Georgia has held numerous volunteer positions, including a seat on the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's local board and its national Clinical Trials Initiative Advisory Group. She served on the American Cancer Society's regional committees and board, as well as on the California Division, where she is President-Elect. She serves on the Southwest Regional Community Advisory Board, the Education Network to Advance Cancer Clinical Trials board, Cancer Navigator Advisory Committee, and the California Dialogue on Cancer. She has also been on the board of the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory since 1994, serving as chair from 2000 to 2006.

Georgia's achievements have been widely recognized. She has been named a Woman of Achievement, Woman of Dedication, Women Together, Woman of Balance, Biotech Superstar, Komen Hero and Komen Cameo, Cool Woman, Public Health Champion, Community Weaver, and one of San Diego Magazine's People to Watch. She was recognized by UCSD as the Outstanding Faculty Mentor in the Social Sciences and Humanities and twice received UCSD's Diversity Award. She was named "Woman of the Year" for the 78th District by the California Legislative Women's Caucus and frequently has been called upon to testify before the State legislature on cancer and clinical trials related bills.

Dr. Sadler's consummate dedication and her unique background (BS in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Graduate School MBA, post-graduate training at the University of London, and PhD in public health) have enabled her to secure large research grants and publish dozens of articles in diverse peer-reviewed scientific journals so that others may benefit from UCSD's experiences. When not addressing the demon, cancer, Georgia has many other passions. A well rounded life with her husband, Blair, who is President Emeritus of Children's Hospital and Health Center, is uppermost on her list. The couple has two adult daughters, Noelle and Nicole, around whom their lives revolve. The arts and travel have a magnetic attraction for the family and are the focal point for many memorable family times together.

The Board of Authority of the 2006 Luau & Longboard Invitational and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center are pleased to recognize the life, work, and aloha spirit of Dr. Georgia Robins Sadler by awarding her the 2006 Rell Sunn "Queen of Makaha" Award.
